Commentary by Chaplain (Lt. Col.) Daniel Hornok
151st ARW/HC

11/24/2009 - SALT LAKE CITY -- I recently read in Psychology Today that in 2008 there were 4,000 books published on the subject of happiness. Four thousand books! That is a stunning amount, especially when you consider that in the year 2000 there were less than 50. Draw whatever conclusions you want, but I think we can safely say there are a lot of people today who want to know where to find happiness.

Although I haven't written any books in my time, I often refer to a book that speaks to the subject of happiness. It's called the Bible. The Bible tells us that 2,000 years ago, God sent his son Jesus into the world so that through his death on our behalf, we could have a personal relationship with him. Lest we forget, Christmas speaks of that birth and the happiness that came from that. Whether you share this belief or not, my wish for all of us is that no matter what religion you identify with, that we genuinely recognize that there is hope for happiness. It is important to remember that we are never alone, and that life eventually, and ultimately, will get better.

During this holiday season, we ask that you take the time to look out for those around you - your friends, coworkers and family members. This time of year can be tough on those going through financial hardships and family issues, so it's critical that you reach out to those in need - it may save a life.

Your wing chaplain office is happy to assist those in need. For the names and cell phone numbers of our wing chaplains, please call (801) 245-2265.

We wish all members of the Utah Air National Guard a safe and happy holiday season!

Rather than denigrating a fellow military member's faith perhaps you could acknowledge the Chaplain's inclusive support and concern for all military members as large numbers of our troops are deployed during what is traditionally an emotional season.Your animus toward religion while widely documented is unnecessary and your comment is unprofessional both as a military officer representing the service and as a Major addressing a Lt Col.

The Bible is a book of happiness REALLY You must be reading the Reader's Digest condensed pamphlet version.
